Its singers, which include Allentown native Jerome Collins and Forks Township native Walter Chaser, are as talented, or more so, than most singers on the charts these days. Its show is filled with sly, intelligent humor. It's visually engaging. And, of course, every song is a hit.

“We were working with several different managers and trying to get which track we should do. We were mixing out of several different studios. So it was a big undertaking for the group. We did the majority of the recording in Los Angeles last summer and it took until almost May, almost another year, for us to get all the pieces in line. So this is something – not only because we have artists like Stevie Wonder and Elton John on the album are we super excited about it, it’s just been a long time coming for this album. And to have a lot of new material – some that we’ve been performing in our live shows, but a lot of songs that are brand new – it’s very exciting for us."

A full-length album is in the works, with most of the recording to take place this summer, Chase says.

"I don't want to lock us down to say when the release is, but we're hoping to have it released for our fall tour this coming year," he says. He says it has been "a labor of love" that will "be stepping up our game," but declines to say precisely how.

"We're kind of saving it, to talk about what it is exactly, but it's going to be a new kind of album for us and we're really excited."

I didn’t get to talk to you or Jerome after you guys did Musikfest (in August). How did you guys enjoy that show?

“Oh, it was a highlight of not only last year for us, but probably, I’d say for me, for performing in a group and performing, period, it was just so awesome. And the crowd was. The group – if you asked guys who are not from the Lehigh Valley what they thought of the show, they would say that was the highlight of their entire time performing in Straight No Chaser. Just the outdoor atmosphere, the new stage, and just honestly the crowd reaction. We had a small mosh pit at the end of the show – as the guys mentioned, for us was not normal. We’re not normally the mosh pit type of group. So it was exciting. And we’re looking forward to hopefully coming back sometime.”

DB: How long does it typically take until a song is ready to be performed live?

WC: It’s different for every song. It can be as quick as a day or two. We were in Tennessee … about a month ago, and we decided we wanted to do a version of “Rocky Top” while we were in Tennessee. Literally, the guys arranged it one day, we learned it the next and performed (it) the following day. So that’s one example. Other songs, like the song “Let’s Get It On,” which is a track off our new EP … we had recorded that in the studio back in January of 2009, and it actually did not get performed by us until this past summer. So, (there) was almost two and a half years of it sitting on the shelf … getting reworked … and then it made it on the album, the EP that we just released. So, that was almost three years from when that song first started. And, for some songs we’ll do an original arrangement of and want to tweak it or add something to it, and it goes away for a little bit. Or, it will take a week to arrange the song and then it gets brought back and … we have a choreographer (who) comes in and sometimes adds movements. So, a song can take anywhere from a couple of days, to a couple of weeks, to, in extreme circumstances, a couple of years.

Straight No Chaser popularity unwaning

SNC performs songs ranging from Madonna's "Like a Prayer" to Christmas classics like "Carol of the Bells," and from Toto's "Africa" to Beyonce's "Put a Ring on It."

Chase particularly enjoys performing SNC versions of the standard "Me and My Shadow," the Temptations' "Get Ready" and Coldplay's "Fix You."

"Our goal in arranging isn't necessarily trying to do an exact cover of a song," Chase said. "We try to put a twist on everything."

...what a triumphant return: headlining Musikfest’s Steel Stage with a show lasting nearly two hours, covering 22 full songs (or mash-ups of songs) and three medleys that included parts of 26 others, running a broad variety of styles and ranging from good to stunning.

The audience was so enthusiastic that it created perhaps the largest gathering directly in front of the stage so far, with members of the group calling it Straight No Chaser’s first mosh pit.

...it was in January that musical director Walter Chase and lead singer Jerome Collins say they discovered they would be playing the show they look forward to more than any in their career so far — its Aug. 11 date on the new Sands Steel Stage at Musikfest.

Chase, a Forks Township native, and Collins, originally from Allentown, grew up with Musikfest being a significant annual event in their lives, and this will be their first hometown show.

The group is coming to Gettysburg for the first time, even though it considers Pennsylvania a second home, Chase said.

“We’ve done more concerts in the state of Pennsylvania last year than we did in any other state. And I believe they were all sold out, too, which is a testament to our fan base in Pennsylvania,” he said.

There are a lot of great reasons to follow the SNC guys on Twitter, but this is one of my favorites - the conversations, such as this one from the afternoon of March 11, 2011. I don't normally screencap them, but this one just needed to be. lol By the time Walt said, "...and kittens!" I was cry-laughing, and Randy's calm tweets in the middle of it all makes it that much funnier. And yes, Walt really does say "hope all is well." :o)

“It’s just the 10 of us, 10 mikes, that’s it,” vocalist Walter Chase said in a recent phone interview. “Even on the album, what might sound like a drum machine, that’s all vocal percussion that has been engineered.

“That stems from our main vocal percussion guys, Tyler Trepp, Seggie Isho, Dave Roberts, myself and Randy Stine,” Chase said. “Tyler specifically. ... On our holiday set he does the sound of a sleigh bell; it’s uncanny how well he can imitate things. Seggie does amazing drums, like old-school beat box. ... You almost forget that somebody’s over there drumming with his mouth. It sounds like you’ve got a rhythm section behind you.”

SOUND OFF Interview: Walter Chase of Straight No Chaser

"...they asked us to send in childhood pictures of us from the holidays. When I first saw the box set, it was really neat to see - you know, just paging through and seeing all of us. Plus, if people are holding it up in the audience you can see them because the light reflects off the metallic covers so they look a little red or green."

Straight No Chaser stands alone in Reading show

That was the true secret to Straight No Chaser: The singing was superb. They hit notes surprisingly high and rumblingly low, and the 10 members created a sound so full the lack of instrumentation was forgotten.

They were so good that the sold-out crowd spontaneously began clapping along to some songs and cheered with abandon at others.

It was an added pleasure that former Forks Township resident Walter Chase is the group’s musical director (and sang lead on three of the songs), and Allentown native Jerome Collins is one of the group’s lead singers and handled a good third of their songs Saturday.

TC: I read your bio on the website and it says your nickname is "fatty." What did you do to earn that?

WC: Well first it's a misnomer. It's not a physical reason. We all have nicknames. I've created this fat persona, looking at things to the fullest, everything in excess. It's a fat mindset, looking to go out partying. Plus it's a fun thing to yell at the bar.
