Thanks for sharing this fantastic throwback memorabilia with us lately, Randy!

Straight No Chaser founder is behind new YouTube sensation

Dan Ponce has been working with (not singing in) a new a cappella group for the past year called "Gentleman's Rule."  June 18th they launched their first music video and it has since gone viral! I imagine this must be quite a feeling of déjà vu for Dan, in the best possible way! Also, I must say that the Ponces are an amazing family! And so are the Mechlings, who appear to be "taking over a cappella," as Charlie tweeted the other day.  That's because one of the basses in Gentleman's Rule is his brother, Luke.

Did you conceive the video?

(Dan) Yes, the video was my idea. I had arranged the song “Pachanelly Canon,” which combines Pachelbel’s “Canon,” the song that people know from weddings, and “Ride Wit Me” by Nelly, the hip hop artist from St. Louis. The two pieces of music go together very well. I thought it would be fun to shoot it in Chicago, where the group is based out of, and to recreate a wedding. We had the outdoor ceremony, then the wedding party on a trolley and then the reception. I had arranged the “Pachanelly Canon” a while ago and had always envisioned making a music video just like this. I am so happy with how it turned out.

Check out the video for yourself. - 184,822 hits at the moment!  Although I'm not crazy about the lyrics to the song (I do appreciate the effort to clean them up), I am head over heels for their sound and I can't wait to see what comes next! The video is a lot of fun to watch, too.

"There's always so much more to report beyond time we have on TV,” said Dan Ponce, who continues as a general assignment reporter at Tribune Co.-owned WGN-Channel 9. “This is the perfect opportunity to tell the story behind the story.” He previously spent three years as a reporter at ABC-owned WLS-Channel  7.

Younger brother Anthony Ponce, a general assignment reporter and occasional fill-in news anchor at NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5, said: "We're hoping to give listeners a peek into the world of Chicago journalism, and hear their opinions about the week's biggest stories and how they're covered.”

Former Straight No Chaser singer goes solo

Don't panic! This article is from 2005. At the time, Ryan was formerly IU SNC and had decided to continue with music by going solo. Later on he got the call to join the Atlantic Records SNC. So technically Ryan has been in IU SNC, then with some other groups, then solo, and now he's with the professional SNC. Make sense? Cool.

The referenced solo album, I Can See Forever, was released May 7, 2006 and the MP3 is still available for purchase. I highly recommend it - it's fantastic! We also get to hear the Mrs. on one track, but I won't spoil it for you. You can't buy the physical CD anymore, so if you find one, grab it!

Also, his personal website is now www.ryansongs.com.

A CurtainUp Berkshires Review: Hair

An excellent review of the (Pre-SNC) August 5, 2005 showing of Hair - Charlie was a Tribe member. The accompanying photo is driving me crazy because the guy in the upper left looks just enough like Charlie to possibly be him, but it's so tiny and I haven't been able to get a confirmation. And I have no idea if there was anyone else in the cast who looked like him, or what kind of costume he had on. This is the kind of question that keeps people like me up at night... lol

Whether you're seventeen or seventy, you'll probably agree that this latest incarnation of the musical with a plot as light as its rock score, is an authentic piece of musical Americana that captures the musical and political-philosophical zeitgeist of a now grown-up generation.

Like You Like It (Theater Review)

A Pre-SNC review of Charlie and the cast of Like You Like It. It doesn't, like, seem like the reviewer liked it much. pfft! What-ever! lol Honestly, there will always be people who love what you do and people who hate it. My advice is to write for the people who love what you do.  Or you could also just write for yourself and go with Charlie's famous "You can't please any of the people any of the time." ;o)

Among the problems: The original play's interweaving subplots and social and sexual commentary are simplified almost to non-existence here, making the central love story - between Rosalind (Rebecca Bellingham) and Orlando (Charlie Mechling) extremely conventional and only intermittently interesting.

Straight No Chaser alumni team up with RCA Records

Please note the date on this: April 2001, pre-SNC.  If you have any questions about this article, I recommend also reading this other article and listening to Michael Itkoff's second SNC FanChat.

When I first found and read this, quite honestly my jaw dropped. Five of them were in a group before SNC signed with Atlantic Records??? What?! I had a bunch of questions, but my biggest few were 1. What happened to the group? 2. What happened to the CD? Was it ever released? And 3. Randy! He was going to be the tour manager instead of a bass?! Really? Why???

In this other interview, Jerome talks about how unfortunately the events of 9/11 caused a lot of shifting at RCA (and other labels) and they were released from their contract.  Obviously there were a lot of tragic things that were going on at the time, but still, I can imagine that losing a shot at a dream must have been difficult.  And then looking to the future and knowing that Michael Itkoff, Steve and Dan walked away from a second shot at that dream with SNC... wow. They all know what their priorities are, and I truly have nothing but the utmost respect for all of them.  And of course we know that this has a happy ending for the other three guys, and three more guys as well!

Later I found out that the CD was not released by RCA, or even in the originally intended a cappella format. I highly recommend taking the time to listen to Michael Itkoff's second SNC FanChat episode to find out what did happen to the songs, though! Fascinating stuff! :o)

I still have no idea about the Randy question, but I will say this: After reading through so many articles for this site and knowing the Atlantic signing story, it strikes me that Randy always seems to be exactly where he's needed. That is certainly an admirable quality.

Now the five original members of Straight No Chaser live in Atlanta where they are working on their first CD with RCA Records. The band's name is TEN to FIVE, which it got from Straight No Chaser, because they were originally a group of 10 and five of them are still together.
